Date taught: October 9 – November 27, 2019

Teachers: Andrew & Thaddeus

Have you ever been confused while reading through Leviticus or Deuteronomy?
Perhaps you’ve wondered, what is the relevance of all these various Old Testament laws today and what does any of it have to do with Jesus?

The Law of God is a huge topic which many Christians today do not understand. However, understanding how God’s Word speaks about His Law is essential for us to fully understand the Biblical narrative and even the Gospel itself!

Furthermore, it has tremendous implications for how we understand Christian ethics and moral issues today. For example:

  • Why do we point to some laws as the basis for Christian moral teachings about life and sexuality, yet seem to ignore some others about eating shellfish or wearing clothing of two materials?

  • How does our salvation/justification and keeping the law work?

If you’ve ever struggled with questions like these or had difficulty in understanding the relevance of God’s law to us today, this class is for you!

This 8-week class will take us systematically through the Bible as we explore how God’s law fits within the big picture of Redemptive History, and how it relates to us. You will learn the tools to help you understand how to properly read and interpret God’s law and why it is still so valuable to us today!

We pray that this interactive class will deepen your understanding of God’s Word, your appreciation of His Gospel of Grace, and add fuel to your awe and worship!

RECOMMENDED RESOURCES

This topic of Biblical Law is massive, and it is impossible to say everything about it – but we hope that we’ve at least whetted your appetites! Below is a shortlist of a few resources we recommend if you desire to continue learning more about the topic of God’s Law. We pray that this class has blessed you in your understanding and knowledge of God’s Word, and most of all – that it has increased your worship of Jesus Christ!

The Shadow of Christ in the Law of Moses

What does the Old Testament have to do with Jesus Christ? Everything.
The first five books of the Old Testament were written centuries before the birth of Jesus. Yet they intricately involve him. Here Dr. Vern S. Poythress explores Genesis through Deuteronomy, demonstrating how the sacrifices and traditions of the Hebrews graphically foreshadow Christ’s relationship with his people. Dr. Poythress shows how Christ himself is the key that unlocks the riches of the Old Testament.

Much of the material of this class is indebted to this book – it is a goldmine of insight!

The Ten Commandments: What They Mean, Why They Matter, and Why We Should Obey Them

Are the 10 Commandments still relevant today? Do they still apply? Which ones? What do they mean in light of God’s mercy revealed in Jesus? Highlighting the timelessness and goodness of God’s commands, this book will help you understand, obey, and delight in God’s law–commandments that expose our sinfulness and reveal the glories of God’s grace to us in Christ.

The Lamb of God: Seeing Jesus in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy

This is a ten-week of guided personal Bible study with relevant teaching, and group discussion, to help you see the person and work of Christ from the Law of Moses. Gain a fresh perspective on the story of Israel’s deliverance and journey, a broader understanding of Jesus as the fulfillment of Scripture, and much more…

Zondervan Handbook to the Bible (Fifth Edition)

From the history and design of the temple in Jerusalem to God’s relationship with the universe, you’ll find it here. The land, culture, battles, feast days, heroes, and villains of Scripture come alive through spectacular color-filled articles and images of meticulous clarity and detail.
